Orthodontics or Aligning Crooked Teeth<\/h2>\n

Orthodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on aligning crooked teeth and correcting jaw and facial irregularities.<\/p>\n

It should be noted that dentistry has more than ten specialties such as periodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, endodontics, prosthodontics, pediatric dentistry, and more.
\nAmong these, orthodontics \u2013 with its full title “Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics” \u2013 is one of the oldest dental specialties, established over a century ago. This field focuses on correcting jaw size discrepancies and dental misalignments.<\/p>\n

In general, jaw and oral irregularities are divided into two main groups:
\n1. Jaw size discrepancies (overgrowth or undergrowth of the jaws)
\n2. Dental crowding or misalignment.<\/p>\n

Depending on which jaw is smaller or larger, people are classified into three groups:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Class I: Both jaws are normal in size (photo). About 80% of people fall into this category.
\n\"Class<\/p>\n

Class II: The lower jaw is smaller than the upper jaw, or the upper jaw is larger than the lower jaw. About 17% of people belong to this group.<\/p>\n

Class III: The lower jaw is larger than the upper jaw, or the upper jaw is smaller than the lower jaw. About 3% of people fall into this group.<\/p>\n

Many jaw irregularities, if diagnosed early (around ages 5 to 10), can be corrected with orthodontic treatment. Especially in Class II cases, early orthodontics can be highly effective. However, many Class III cases cannot be treated with orthodontics alone.<\/p>\n

If these irregularities are diagnosed later (after the age of 14), orthodontics alone cannot correct jaw size. In such cases, surgical procedures such as Orthognathic Surgery will be required.<\/p>\n

Dental Crowding and Misalignment<\/h2>\n

Dental crowding and misalignment can have different causes, with genetics and premature loss of baby teeth being the two most common reasons.<\/p>\n

It is best to treat dental misalignment in early adolescence (around ages 10 to 14). However, if treatment is not performed during these years, it can still be done later in life. In fact, straightening and aligning teeth with orthodontics is possible even in adulthood.<\/p>\n

Without treatment, in addition to aesthetic concerns, teeth may be more prone to cavities and even gum disease.<\/p>\n
